Ascorbic acid C5H8O6 is a y-lactone of 2,3-endiol-L-gulonic acid with strong reducing properties, and dehydroascorbic acid is its oxidized form. Most animals are capable of synthesizing vitamin C in their liver, but humans, monkeys, guinea pigs, and some fish are among those that cannot.

The molecule of vitamin C has an L configuration, which does not mean that it is left-handed. In other words, the vitamin C molecule rotates the plane of polarization of light to the right, so it is right-handed.

The molecule of D-ascorbic acid is left-handed, but it is not vitamin C or any other compound because it has no biological activity.

To summarize: there is no such thing as left-handed or right-handed vitamin C, and the confusion around vitamin C relates to the confusion between optical rotation, indicated by the symbols "+ " and "-", and spatial isomerism (symbol L- or D-).
